Despite being nearer to the main population centres (such as Istanbul or Ankara) of the country than central and eastern parts of the Black Sea coast, this region is remote, largely due to lack of an airport or major highways.
Western Karadeniz is bordered by Marmara Region to west, Central Anatolia to south, and Central Karadeniz to east. To the north, it's bounded by a long coastline of Black Sea.
In ancient times, the region was known as Paphlagonia.
