Superior guest experience at Skyline Village Inn
The Skyline is an historic landmark perched on top of the mountain at Gillespie gap overlooking the Catawba Valley and its surrounding mountains. It was built by a local moonshiner named John Greer off of profits from his illegal trade. A cavern still lies beneath the Parking Lot where John had a still and made his moonshine. John also handcrafted much of the wooden furniture and fixtures in the building using a wood inlay technique called marquetry. He was a master of this technique and built many unique qnd beautiful features. The walls are 2 feet thick and made of concrete, steel and granite. He was building during WW2 and had a hard time finding rebar so he substituted railroad tracks! The paneling in the building was made by John and his brother from 22 different varieties of local wood left over from orders from his sawmill which was located in nearby Avery County. Our son Scott and his wife have an adventure guide service called Thrifty Adventures. They teach rock climbing, rapelling, and take people on outdoor whitewater adventures in the summer.
