Hidden gem, up high in the mountains with an amazing view. Simple accommodation with hidden paths to boating lake, butterfly farm, zip line. Lovely staff and a small simple restaurant for dinner and breakfast.
4x4 recommended for access to, and within, property but the staff will help if not.

The location is just amazing. Being able to observe wildlife from Iyok Ami is such a bonus (no need to go to the national park). You can take a walk (they have various paths) or just do it from inside. The nature there is breathtaking.
Flori and Lucrecia are very sweet and prepare healthy meals for those who don't want to live the place.
Good wifi and hot water are available.
And a fireplace if the place turns too cold :)
Located just 6.8 km from Jardin Botanico Lankester, Casa Irazu offers accommodation in Cartago with access to a garden, a shared lounge, as well as bicycle parking.

Saw some birds in common area.
Food delivered to room was pretty good. Hot.
What killed us was the room was freezing with no heat or space heater or extra blanket. There was a large very cold bathroom with absolutely no hot water. Wires sticking out of the shower head. No counter or table to place toiletries. Very dark and dank. A small outdoor light fixture with probably 40 watt bulb was way above the tiny sink. No other lighting. No window light.
And nowhere comfortable to sit with room. Slat wood bench on front porch and in room.
But this location was at better pricing value than a few others we stayed at.
Overall, if there had been heat and some warm water I would have doubled my opinion.

Visit Irazú then head to a hike in Prusia and on to Turrialba, stay at the Turrialtico for an incredible view and value (and Posole and jalapeño steak,) then book a raft trip with Econaturales on the Pacuare River, ask for Michael and Eduardo as your guides, they keep you in the raft and out of the river, you’ll be happy and tired so stay another night to eat, drink, and recover- our mistake was hopping in the car and getting back on the road after 27km on the Pacuare, a perfect day!

Don't miss out on the Basilica which is the most important church of Costa Rica. It's fun to see the train make its way slowly through the town.
The main reason for visiting Cartago is of course the Irazu Volcano; it's quite easy to hop on the public bus to get there.
The owner, Mili, was very helpful in all aspects of our stay, including the booking process, and offering recommendations for restaurants, transportation, and other activities before and after we arrived. The restaurant recommendations were unnecessary, as the food onsite was delicious. The hiking trails nearby were excellent. The hotel also offers bicycling, rafting, and horseback riding. Before we arrived and when we left, Mili was quietly standing by to coordinate any potential difficulties with logistics.
This very basic place but situated in exceptional place. If you are looking for hotel in this area you are also interested in quetzales, and here you can see them just from restaurant zone or from balcony.
It's cloud forest on the altitude around 2700, so it's pretty cold and hotel is without heating, but they provide a lot of blankets, so it's ok.
This place also give you access to well maintained trails in cloud forest, so need to go to National Park ;)
We loved our stay at this hotel, it's so cozy and nice. The room was big with beautiful views at the backyard. The breakfast was delicious with plenty of options to chose. We needed to use the laundry service and the lady in the reception arranged everything for us and the guy who did the laundry was very communicative, because he had some problems while washing our stuff and he kept us updated with what was happening and did not let us to wait.
A lovely family feeling. It has everything you need and a very warm welcome. Open kitchen and we were offered a tasty soup with the whole family. Really kind. Nice seats on the terrace. Parking space inside. Especially wonderful if you are alone or staying longer because the Señora is so kind, open and would help with anything. Highly recommend it for an oasis in Cartago. The city centre is also pleasant with some antique buildings.
The room was big, with acess to a well equiped shared kitchen and outdoor space. We appreciated a lot the safe parking space inside the garrage and the cute kitten of the hosts (do not worry if you are not an animal lover, you will not know he is there). Nice people and a good location in Cartago, safe and residencial neighbourhood
They have created a nice place with a pool, small gym, pooltable and some sitting areas with views on the town. Garden is well maintained. Shower was nice and warm. Location was nice, just of the main road. Opposite the hotel was a cemetary, which we did not mind, but might not be good for paranormal sensitive people :).
Very cute little nest a few minutes away from Cartago in a quiet area. We really liked the effort in decoration and making the place special, with the hammock. Also a very friendly host. Unfortunately we were on our way back to Europe so we only stayed for the night and couldn’t discover the surroundings.
Really cute hostel. Very friendly and helpfull staff. Good home cooking (especially the home-made hot sauce :). Lots of humming-birds around the hostel. 7km of walking trails around the hotel (if you are a couch potatoe like me DON'T take the 'difficult' trail) , Very good value for money.
The owner was very helpful, calling around to find out the bus schedule. Telling us about things to do in the area. We had to switch room after the first night because it was booked. He offered us the larger suite at no extra cost and was quite happy to treat us.
Really nice hotel run by a sweet family who enjoy talking and sharing tips for traveling around the area. The location is perfect, super close to Irazu and other natural attractions. I stayed here a total of 6 nights or so.
The owners were super friendly and helpful and the house was really big and all the amenities were great. It was also really well located for doing trips into Cartago and Irazu Volcano. Would definitely come back!
The only good thing I have to say about this hotel is the friendly staff. Emily was very nice and helpful and spoke excellent English. Oh and the location is also good and I could park the car behind their gate.
There was a common kitchen that you can use and make a coffee. The room was big and clean. There were blankets and they were very useful during the cold night.
The hotel had a lovely garden.
Maria and her daughter Denia made our stay very joyful. All her suggestions were spot on. Room was very clean and comfortable. Views from the hotel are amazing.
