I was there for a reunion. I was in the Navy and one of the ships I was on was named the U.S.S. Harlan County. It had been named after Harlan County, Kentucky. Three years ago, former sailors who had served aboard the ship started having reunions at the local VFW. The area is a nature lovers dream. As Harlan is situated in a valley, every morning a dense mist shrouds the upper reaches of the surrounding mountains. The trees and foliage is dark green and thick. There are numerous hiking trails and several museums to explore. I recommend the Coal Miners Museum nearby.
