Dover is famous for the white cliffs which would have been a striking sight to the Romans as they advanced on England. They decided to construct a port at this strategic spot and it has held an important role ever since. Ferries to Calais and Dunkirk cross the English Channel several times daily and some brave souls even manage to swim across.
A Roman lighthouse still stands atop a hill overlooking the port, but is easily missed as it was incorporated into Saxon St Mary de Castro Church as the bellower. It is found within the grounds of 13th-century Dover Castle, one of England’s largest castles, whose multi-level ramparts sit above tunnels where the World War II Dunkirk evacuation was planned.
Another Roman monument is the Painted House whose remains include some of the best-preserved Roman murals north of Italy. Even older is the Bronze Age boat displayed in Dover Museum.
The Dover Transport Museum showcases vintage vehicles, and the Blériot Memorial marks the spot where the first airplane to fly across the Channel first touched English soil. A path runs along the top of the nearby cliffs, while at their feet is a shingle beach.
The Dover accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with pools, cheap inns and B&Bs near the train station.

Dover is a must see and can be placed on your bucket list. The walk along the cliffs is great and the Dover castle is well maintained and very interesting. Parking in Dover is as per all UK towns a problem and you need to plan accordingly or you can use the local bus services.

We spent a day and a half in Dover and came specifically to see the historical Fan Bay Shafts (National Trust) and Dover Castle (English Heritage).
We found Fan Bay Shafts interesting and very 'genuine' history. Note that it is 45 minutes underground in damp, but not cold, tunnels, wearing a hard hat and head torch.
Dover Castle warrants a whole day or more! Lots to see.
We had time to see Deal Castle too. Good as a contrast, as it is a Tudor fortification. They have tried hard with their pretty good first floor exhibition, but the basement is an underused and under-explained resource which could be much more imaginatively tackled.

Dover needs significant regeneration: the town is tired and not appealing. I have known Dover since 1965 and to be honest it is probably now at its worst, but I can see some small signs of improvement: however everything being demolished is becoming a car park!! Dover needs to look like Folkestone or Deal: more independent and unique shops to attract people. Not the standard chains stores and "cheap shops", which of course have their place but different shops attract curiosity.
The castle remains the main attraction, as does western heights and Dover Patrol memorial. Kirsney Abbey and Russell Gardens provide a tranquil side. the ride through Alkham Valley, always puts a smile on my face.

Dover is a very busy port town but also a town full of interesting history. We loved walking out along the pier, watching the ferries come in & go out, we enjoyed visiting Dover Castle very much, it is well worth putting a day aside to visit the castle and we found the town centre to contain everything we needed for our visit; minimart, chemist, shoe shop, pubs, restaurants & coffee shops. It’s small enough to walk everywhere & plenty to do. There’s a great walk along the famous white cliffs which we ran out of time to do but we’d like to come back one day & see more of this great town.
In all, Dover is a bit rough around the edges but a very interesting town to visit, especially if you like boats, the seaside & history.

Plenty to do in Dover and with travel issues (traffic and train strikes) well worth reducing the stress and planning a day in Dover. Premier Inn offered (online reservation) for Bag stashers. Local museum has amazing Bronze age boat! Dover castle has so many different historic periods covered - Roman lighthouse, Plantagenet castle and World war II hospital / headquarters - allow plenty of time.

Dover is really undergoing a regeneration process, the beach are is very popular and the marina is just lovely. The town itself is very run down indeed and we avoided it this time. We did spend a lot of time walking on the beach and enjoying the lovely atmosphere.
In all my travels I have never had such a terrific experience in lodging. The room was quaint, comfortable and quiet. The breakfast was not only more than expected but also very good. Staff was engaged and they made sure our stay met or exceeded our expectations. Location was great as it was walking distance to Dover Castle, shopping and restaurants. The best thing about the Hubert House was our hostess, Farrah. I have never seen anyone more concerned about the quality of our stay. Thank you.
Very friendly owner .despite coming really late at night.she helped to sort out the keys. Helped with space to park car despite I didn't reserve it as it says on the site. Parking is available for free which is great. Very clean place.comfy beds.
Great location for everything .It is at the foot of the Dover Castle. Didn't have time to explore.Am definitely coming back to stay as a tourist.
Nice little place. Our room looked out over neighbors gardens as well as a great view of Dover Castle. Owner was superior! Kind lady that was always there to greet you and offer any help she could. Location was great. We were able to walk up to Castle by nearby footpath. Also close to market and restaurants. Just a block away from bus stop to take us to Canterbury.
Just a lovely place. They were waiting to greet us at the door when we arrived by train from London. Just wish we had more time there. The rooms were charming and spotless. The breakfast was wonderful. This is our place for the next time we are in Dover. We have been to Dover before but never stayed at a fantastic place like Heathwood before.
Location was excellent to get to the port of Dover (less than 10mins drive). Martin the host was so friendly and waited for us until 22:30 to check in. Room was very clean, they even had in-room coffee making facilities and some toiletries for shower. Also dog friendly and Martin couldn't have been sweeter towards our dog.
- House is very well maintained and beautifully decorated
- The room was very comfy and clean
- Breakfast was delicious
- Host was very welcoming and friendly
- B&B is located in a very quiet area (a bit outside the city), with a beautiful view
- We have not tried it but the B&B also includes a heated pool
Nice room with all the necessary amenities, good location within walking distance to pretty much everything important in Dover. It was all made even better by John, the concierge, who is a great storyteller and very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the area and the history of Dover!
We had a late ferry crossing and just wanted to get to out hotel quickly and easily that first night. The Holiday inn is about a 7 minute drive from Dover port, right off the main road, with plentiful parking. Our room was large and very clean. The beds were very comfortable.
Our room was delightfully light, clean and comfortable, exactly as described.
The location is excellent being only a short walk to the seaside and the city centre.
Sharon was welcoming and very helpful, keeping our bike safe and providing us with local information.
Very kind and welcoming when you first arrive at the hotel. All the staff are very helpful and friendly, the hotel and rooms are immaculate i would highly recommend staying at the BW Dover Marina Hotel in dover, Special Thanks to Mr. Mayur (Receptionist).
Breakfast was lovely , plenty of choice and nice quality , we also had dinner the night before and again great choice and delicious ... The handcut chips are the best .The room was in a small.village but only a 10 minute drive from Dover .
Guest house was good price vs hotels I often stay at. Shortish walk to town centre for evening food/ drink… although Dover is unfortunately a little rough around the edges these days, so wouldn’t want to do the walk in the dark.
Stayed here with my wife recently and was extremely happy with this hotel. This place really stands out in dover and was a breath of fresh air. I liked the receptionist Mayur and his way of supporting during the day of our stay
Very friendly hosts, very happy to help with anything we required. We had stayed in a number of different pubs, hotels, B & B's and this bed was the most comfortable we had slept in in 3 weeks!
Very cozy guest house. Beautiful and comfortable rooms. Delicious breakfast!! Sharon was very nice and welcoming.very close to the Dover Castle, White Cliffs and the sea. Highly recommended 👌
Very nice hosts. Checkin really easy. They offered to park and lock our bikes in their shed next to hotel. Expect no luxury. Small room, but good price and next tot train station in Dover.
Proximity to the railway station. Everything expected was provided and the room was very clean, although very compact. Well priced compared to the local chain hotels eg Premier Inn.
