Roads very badly potholed.
Roads very badly potholed. Town looks very run down - very sad to see, especially by way of contrast with my memories from the early 70s. Municipal funds clearly not being allocated to improving (or even maintaining) municipal services, but no surprises there ...
The Fork & Dagger restaurant was a very pleasant surprise - great food, great service.

Not exactly the town or city it used to be approximately eight or so years ago. No drinkable water, potholes everywhere without exception. It has gone backward so much that the citizens have nothing to be proud of. Unless an urgent intervention is done to change this decay, they will soon lose the festival goers in the future.

Beautiful historic buildings, feels like Europe.
Beautiful historic buildings, feels like Europe. Loved, loved it. Most of the streets are very clean and lovely. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of the people/residents. We saw smiles everywhere you went. It was the most beautiful thing.

I was in Grahamstown for work not for leisure.
I was in Grahamstown for work not for leisure.
The side roads are full of potholes. I can see that an effort was made to fill the potholes in the main street, but the side streets are in a shocking state. The sidewalks are also very uneven, you need to watch were you are walking the whole time.
I heard from the locals that they get water every third day for a few hours a day. Of course they are also getting load shedding. Do therefore make sure you stay in a place with backup water and power.
The town is just generally looking very run down.

The place was not well organised.
The place was not well organised. The toilet did not have carpet and air freshener. It was a room for 3 people sharing but they put toiletries for one. Bed rooms didn’t have small carpet the floor is extremely cold. There was coffee and tea ingredients but no kettle to boil water. We were told to organise dinner before 3 to avoid disappointment. But to our surprise we placed an order by 10:30 only to get a call from them to say the chef had an emergency around 5:30. They only had 1 chef that’s my question?
I was warmly welcomed. The studio which is situated in a quiet, safe area is immaculate and luxuriously furnished. It has a lovely view over GRAHAMSTOWN, especially at night. The bed puts grandma’s featherbed in the shade! There was a starter pack of teas and coffee, milk and homemade rusks available and toiletries in the bathroom. The evening was a cold one, but the gas heater ensured that the studio was comfortably cosy in no time. I can recommend Studio on the Hill for a comfortable, restful and enjoyable stay.
The hosts had incredibly beautiful souls and were very kind. The rooms were stunningly beautiful and clean, each accompanied by a thoughtful booklet crafted by the hosts, providing valuable insights into Grahamstown. The place exudes tranquility, especially the pool area, where the host generously offered us fruit as we enjoyed their captivating estate. The Wi-Fi is exceptional, paired with DSTV in every room—words fall short; booking with them is a decision you won't regret.
Quite area of Grahamstown. Breakfast was good. Natalie our host was very informative, and on her recommendation we went to The Highlander restaurant right across the road from our B & B for dinner. What a lovely place to just chill looking over the beautifully kept St Andrew's High school playing fields. The setting was lovely, and the food offerings were plentiful at great prices. Highly recommend this eating house.
The Graham hotel is in a good location, easy to access Makhanda places of interest.
The receptionist on duty was amazing, she's smiling & very welcoming, I think her name is Gwen🌼
The water temperature was good throughout the day.
Well done Housekeeping for yò services throughout my stay.
Kitchen staff members are glorious, always willing to please the guests. Well done 👏and the food is appetizing 👌
I liked everything about the place mostly because of the host, she’s passionate about this, she would check every morning if I need anything, very understanding and considerate, I’m definitely sure I will book there again when I go to grahamstown, and I was handed the keys by her, she fetched me from the frontier hotel, how sweet? I love everything about there simply because of her.
Martin and his team were absolutely incredible. From personalised meals to great conversations at the bar or front of the braai. Rooms were spacious and clean. The lodge was private enough to feel that we were in nature, but the location was conveniently close enough to Grahamstown to visit family whenever we wanted to.
the property is well located close to central Grahamstown with beautiful facilities and lovely staff. The booking staff communicates well and always keeps you in the loop. I had an accident with my dress the morning of my graduation and the staff helped me quickly fix the mess, totally saved my graduation. Im grateful
The location: An amazing view, far enough from Grahamstown for peace and tranquility but close enough for comfort.
The accommodation: Stunning little cottage with all the amenities that you need. Solar powered which meant no loadshedding!
Overall: A little gem in the mountains that is worth every cent paid.
Excellent location, staff was extremely helpful. While there are challenges in Makhanda city with water and electricity, the hotel had good backup plans. Breakfast by a warm fire each morning was a special treat. And the building has historical significance: this was the home of Piet Retief.
The property is in a great location near the schools and universities and is a large home converted to a boutique hotel. as a result the rooms are large and homely and it was all tastefully decorated. The breakfast (included) was great and we also had a lovely dinner served for us.
Self-catering only. But everything you could possibly need to self-cater was available, and basics like salt, pepper, tea, milk, coffee (with a proper plunger), etc., all supplied complementarily. Attractively and pleasantly furnished.
The host provides various cereal options. The property is in a very safe, quiet, and beautiful estate. Water was always available and the aircon, heater, and electric blanket came in handy during the very cold Grahamstown nights.
Bed and pillows very comfortable. Amazing breakfast ordered off a menu. Linda very helpful with anything that you need. The self catering kitchen area has everything you need. Enough plug points.
Conveniently based for touring Grahamstown and the surrounds. Pretty garden for enjoying an early morning coffee. Comfy beds and a good shower. Large Shoprite just down the road.
Nice place to stay on the outskirts of Grahamstown.. The views of the Valley below are breath taking. Very quiet place to come back to after the hustle and bustle of the town.
Very friendly, helpful staff (Gogo was great!), lovely accommodation, very good location for exploring Grahamstown and local area. Excellent breakfast, comfortable room.
