Ethiopia by train

Rail transport in Ethiopia currently consists only of a line from Djibouti to Dire Dawa. The line continues from Dire Dawa to Addis Ababa, but is no longer operational. A new (freight) rail network is currently being built. The Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC) is also apparently planning a Light Railway Network project in Addis Ababa. The light Railway Network project is expected to transport 20,000 passengers per day and is hoped to assist in providing a solution for Addis Ababa’s transportation problems. The railroad between Addis Ababa and Djibouti was a slow and uncomfortable service that has since been closed down. The main stations were Addis Ababa, Debre Ziet, Nazret/Adama, Dire Dawa and Djibouti. Much of the previous track work is damaged or has been removed. In September 2010 construction was commenced on a new network. The project only involves a freight service at this time and is planned to provide a 5,000 km long network, radiating from Addis Ababa. The system will be constructed in two phases and is planed to handle 6 million tonnes of freight.
