With its eight distilleries - Bunnahabhain, Bruichladdich, Bowmore, Caol Ila, Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin and newly opened Kilchoman - it is easy to see why Islay is probably most famous for its whisky. Port Ellen closed it's doors in 1983. And in 2004 a ale brewery opened, Islay Ale Brewery. Which's been awarded with 'The Best Real Ale' award.
