As elsewhere in Korea, a grasp of basic Korean will be helpful. If you plan on an extended visit, consider learning to read the Korean written script, hangeul. It takes very little time to pick up the basics, and it can be endlessly helpful. Many merchants and employees in major tourists areas, including Insadong, Myeongdong, and Itaewon, will probably speak at least some English, as well as Chinese and Japanese. In addition, most younger Koreans are required to study English in school and are more likely to speak and understand English. However, due to a lack of speaking practice, only a small number will be conversant in the language. Some older citizens speak English, but most do not, especially outside the city center. Fortunately, tourists coming from Japan has increased these few years, and many mechants are able to speak Japanese. To increase communication and also consumers, they have now lesson to learn basic Japanese as well.
