The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail follows the route of the forced westward migration of the entire Cherokee Nation.
In 1838 and 1839, the Cherokee were forced by the U.S. federal government to give up their lands to the east of the Mississippi River and migrate to Oregon. It was named "The Trail of Tears" because of the devastating effects. Many Indians faced hunger, sickness, disease, and some even faced death.Over 4,000 to 15,000 Cherokee Indians died of the above effects. It is a sad story, and yet a true one, but we will all remember that the Cherokee Indians had to suffer because of our greedy wants for land.
