Vacation cities in Gangwon

  • Hongcheon, Wonju, Pyeongchang, Hoengseong
  • A vacation resort and a forest bath that will refresh you - the best tourist site for the best vacation ever.
  • -Mt. Odaesan National Park: Centering around Birobong, standing at 1,563 meters above sea level, five peaks line up like a folding screen, while Sogeumgang Valley, which means little Mt. Geumgangsan, is situated below. Mt. Odaesan is originally a by-name for China's Shanxisheng Mt. Qingliangshan, but Jajangyulsa who studied in these mountains during the Silla dynasty decided to call the mountain in Korea Mt. Odaesan since the features of the two mountains were very similar. As the physical aspects of Mt. Odaesan are smoother than Mt. Seoraksan, anyone can easily take up the challenge of hiking here. Also, people of all ages love Mt. Odaesan as the perfect place for a forest bath.

-Woljeongsa Temple: Famous for its Citadel Museum, which has on display numerous cultural relics and treasures, and an octagonal nine-stage stone pagoda. The huge fir tree forest road is so beautiful that it has been the setting of many dramas and movies. -Sangwonsa Temple: Sangwonsa Temple preserves Korea's oldest grand temple bell (National Treasure No. 36). Ash remains of the Buddha brought from the Tang Dynasty are embedded at Jeongmyeolbogung in Sangwonsa Temple, singled out as the Buddhist number-one sacred ground in Korea. -Korea Botanic Garden: Widely varying flowers and plants can be seen in the Korea Botanic Garden. Flowers bloom from spring to autumn in the wild flower community, a perfect place to take a photograph. -Herb Nara Tourist Farm: This is a famous dating course. More than 100 types of herbs thrive in the garden and herb restaurants here serve tasty and healthy food. -Mt. Chiaksan National Park: Centering around Birobong that stands at 1,288 meters above sea level are other peaks up to 1,000 meters. Mt. Chiaksan with its steep cliffs and solemn physical aspects is a sharp contrast to the smooth, feminine Mt. Odaesan. You can find precious elements of the regional cultural heritage such as beautiful valleys, Sinseondae, Guryongso, Seryeom Falls and Sangwonsa Temple. The park changes color as the seasons pass: azalea and royal azalea in spring, thick forest in summer, red maples in autumn and snow in winter. -Guryongsa Temple: Guryongsa Temple is intertwined with an interesting legend that in the Silla dynasty, the year 666, nine dragons filled up a pond and built the temple atop. The splendid golden single-story building inside Daeungjeon and Daeungjeon itself were built in the representative architecture of the Joseon dynasty. Korea's largest straw mat is another attraction at Guryongsa Temple. -Jangsongmo Ceramic Research Center: The Jangsongmo Ceramic Research Center (about 14 thousand square meters) has a museum displaying pottery from the Silla Kingdom two thousand years ago, Goryeo-era celadon, and white porcelains of the Joseon Dynasty. There is a hands-on D.I.Y center for visitors to make ceramics the traditional way with a potter's wheel. -Chongga Kimchi: A visit to Chongga Kimchi factory will expose the secrets of the taste of Korean kimchi, which is being exported around the world. Visitors can see the entire process of making kimchi from selecting ingredients to fermentation to packaging, as well as taste the different types of kimchi that are made on the spot.
