There are a number of Tatar women offering accommodation from 2.5 USD per person, usually it is around 5 USD per person. They are extremely friendly and will bend over backwards for you while you are there. There usually is no indoor running water (precipitation is low in the town so water is precious) but the accommodation is generally clean. Often they can offer you a garden shower with warm water during the day and evening (water is heated by sun). For a few extra dollars they'll wash your clothes for you (by hand). Many have outside toilets which are just a hole with a toilet seat above a pit.
There are two hotels (one in Old City, the other in New) in the city as well as a hostel (in old city near the palace, behind the store Usta) owned by a Polish man.
