There has been a recent spike in crime in Lexington. While these numbers are small compared to other cities, it is worth saying. As in any city, though, some places are safer than others. In particular, the neighborhoods north of downtown can be dangerous at night. In particular, the area east of North Limestone is dodgy after dark. On North Limestone do not to travel past Third Street alone.
Downtown along Main Street is safer at night than in years past. But in the later hours, especially after midnight, you will be better off in a group of at least two or three.
While it is unlikely that any tourist would go there, East Lexington has became more dangerous over the years, and should be avoided.
The University of Kentucky campus is patrolled by the and is generally quite safe. Still, the campus is open and so offers a certain amount of temptation. As with downtown, late-night travel around campus is usually safer with a partner than alone. Be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine.
The area around Rupp Arena can be a bit edgy. However,if your going to game, you should be fine.
If one travels to Richmond Road, be aware that many off of Richmond Road are considered the worst in Lexington.
