Brentford's High Street was largely reconstructed in the 1960's and while a few Victorian structures remain, the majority of structures present today comprise unimaginative and uninspiring low-rise parades of small-unit retail outlets. Few of the major chains are represented on the High Street, and Brentford suffers from some significant retail absences (the inability to buy men's or women's fashion, for instance, and a paucity of specialist food stores). It is tolerably well served with banks, convenience stores and Polish delicatessens, however.
A small number of specialist shops are worth a particular visit:
Lleixa Art (196 High Street) is an excellent specialist art shop, supplying the local artistic community with an eclectic range of products at competitive prices.
The Fibreglass Shop (197 High Street) provides quality specialist materials and advice for hobbyists and those in the trade.
Naked Grain (192 High Street) is an Aladdin's cave of esoteric homeware and small furnishings from around the globe, competitively priced and with helpful staff.
The Bijou Box (196 High Street) is an independent gift shop specialising in quirky and imaginative cards and presents for all ages.
Brentford Radio Control (5 Albany Parade, High Street) is west London's premier radio control shop, providing a vast range of goods and experienced assistance to beginners and advanced hobbyists alike.
Goddards (Roman House, High Street) is a Brentford institution - a vast, sprawling series of showrooms selling every type of household furniture (mostly new, some secondhand). An antidote to the Swedish furniture superstores (and a 'must' for anyone with an eye for kitsch and retro chic), Goddards' stock appears to be resolutely anti-fashion, but always fascinating.
