New Rail Project in Oahu
Oahu and the City and County of Honolulu are currently working on a new elevated rail project to significantly ease congestion on the island, and to create new jobs. The project is officially called the Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor and is expected to be completed in phases through 2012 and 2019. Some locals believe that the new rail transit will be named, TheRail, after the currently existing TheBus system. It is expected to connect the southern Leeward Coast (commonly known as the West Side, or West Oahu) with Ala Moana Shopping Center in downtown Honolulu.
