The Hostal Rancho Colibrí (Hummingbird Ranch). Highly recommended. This is more of a guest hacienda than a hostal with all private rooms and very quiet. It's a colonial type hacienda built with over 100 arches on a steep mountainside above town. The rooms have balconies overlooking 50 miles of the Andean Mountains. A half acre of pre-inca style terracing supports a hummingbird garden and bird refuge. The hacienda is shaded by an "Enchanted Elfin Forest" Hot showers and use of the large, light and fully equipped kitchen included. Arguably the most beautiful cheap hostal in Bolivia. It costs $6.00 a night with discounts available for longer stays and groups.
Getting there can be a hassle, especially with your backpack. From the main plaza it's four steep blocks up and then one half block to the right. Don't expect to be able to see it clearly from the town because it's covered with trees. Ask the stores around the plaza or the Flota Inquisivi bus station where to find "Casa de Don Marko el Gringo, Hostal Colibri." After 5:45 PM it has a dim street light hanging from a eucalyptus tree at the entrance. You could take Santiago Mamani or Cesar's taxi (see getting Around) if you aren't up for the steep walk. The Alojamiento Santiago is almost directly in front of the Santiago Bus Office on Calle Bolivar two blocks from the plaza. This is also a private house. In the plaza ask for Don Eriko Helguero. It has three rooms with 7 beds each on a balcony overlooking a patio and garden. The owner will try and assure you that you have a private room. It costs $4.00 a night. Phone 76536725 The owner can make up a sauna for which he charges $7.00 for a group sauna.
The Hotel Quime is a half block from the plaza. It's a pretty ugly place, with the standard fare of a bed in a room. Purportedly unfriendly and depressing and without a clue about what the Quime area attractions are. Not recommended for foreign tourists. Price unknown.
