Budget in Brunswick (Germany)

  • A definite Brunswick original is Zum Gemütlichen Conny (Diesterwegstrasse 1, 38114 Braunschweig - 0531 54150). In the glorious days when local soccer club Eintracht Braunschweig reigned supreme over the Bundesliga, this was the hangout for players and fans alike back in the day. Dubbed Hähnchen-Conny, their succulent roasted chicken is prepared after a secret family recipe (now in the second generation). To-go (phone ahead for pick-up) or traditionally served with home-made potatoe salad (don't dare ask for French fries!). Despite its status as a dyed in the wool Brunswick original, it is one of the few places in Braunschweig where Härke, a rather bitter beer from neighboring Peine, is served.
  • Zu den Vier Linden (Wiesenstrasse 5, 38102 Braunschweig - 0531 337271) is a somewhat boheme restaurant/ bar, in keeping with its neighborhood Östliches Ringgebiet with a very mixed local crowd. Nice and laid-back atmosphere and a kitchen that stays open till past midnight make this venue a (hidden) gem.
  • Turkish-German dish Doner kebab places can be found all over town (like in any major German city). Most renowned for its Doner are the Bohlweg (Beyti Grillhaus and Kebab Haus), Tandir near night club Merz, and the Dönerdreieck (Doner Triangle - Mesopatmien Grill, Güney Grill, Olive, and others) wegded in between the downtown shopping district and the red light district.
  • Schalander (Stobenstr. 12, 38100 Braunschweig - 0531/2615074) offers a rustic interior and inexpensive German cuisine.
  • A very traditional pizza parlor is Stresa, located on Bohlweg.
  • When you are in the city center some good options for a fast meal are the pizza restaurant in the 'Burg Passage' and the dutch french fries "Imbiss" near 'Karstadt'.
  • Arguably some of the best Italian ice creams north of the Alps can be found at Tiziano . They serve their home-made ice cream at three parlors in Braunschweig. Their branch at Schlossarkaden also serves Italian food and wine.
  • Very popular with the nightlife crowd is Asian eatery Kim-Kim . Located on the party mile next to club Schwanensee and usually packed on the weekends, they serve their meals to go.
  • If you can, please visit or order from Brunswick's Pizza Room (Sophienstr. 12, 38118 Braunschweig - 0531/22 56 131) . This pizza parlor consists of only one room (hence the name), in which the owner and chef toils away while making pizzas to order or to go. Recommended: Pizza Montaverde.
