Cuzco to Machu Picchu in a week travel safety advice

Cuzco to Machu Picchu in a week travel safety advice

  • Altitude sickness - Once you reach Cuzco—at 11,150 feet—you may experience altitude sickness and become winded after even minor exertion (other symptoms include headache and nausea). If you've had trouble at high elevation in the past, arrive a day early to acclimate. The best advice though is to ‘Drink until your eyeballs float.’ Aside from water, the best remedy is said to be coca tea. You can also ask your doctor about the medication Diamox, which prevents altitude-induced headaches and nausea.
  • Upset stomach - Doctors recommend that you drink only bottled water and avoid uncooked vegetables and fruits that you haven't peeled, even in hotels. You should be able to avoid the big tour bus groups by choosing the smaller places mentioned here and dining early (noon and 7 p.m., say). Some restaurants add a service charge, but the waiters rarely see that money, so it's nice to hand them a five to ten percent tip.
