Amtrak runs its Coast Starlight train through San Luis Obispo a couple times a day and also offers bus service to areas statewide including the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and the Central Valley. Make sure you leave plenty of time because it can take up to 7 hours to get to SLO from San Francisco and 8 hours to get to SLO from San Diego. Trains traditionally would run notoriously late, but with recent improvements to Amtrak's agreements with freight trains the service has improved remarkably as of recent.
