How to get out Vega (Texas)
Just to the east of Vega, and also to the west between Vega and the New Mexico border are a number of ghost towns and near-ghost towns which have Route 66 remnants.
Adrian is a tiny community 23 miles west on I-40. It offers a few small attractions.
- Midpoint Cafe, 806 538 6379, . This cafe sits at the midpoint of historic Route 66, with 1,139 miles to either Chicago or Los Angeles. It is the oldest Route 66 café still in operation. The specialty here is ugly crust pies, old-fashioned homestyle pies which are delicious, if misshapen. There is also a souvenir shop.
- Adrian Lions Antique Museum, on old Route 66. Tractors and other early farm equipment from the 1930s and before. Free.
- Giles Hotel - Vintage hotel from the 1930's, now in disrepair.
- Antique Ranch, 300 Historic Route 66, 806 538 9944. A garage during Route 66's heyday, now it is a restaurant full of antiques and memorabilia serving good barbecue.
- Bent Door Trading Post - A once popular souvenir shop, long closed. The building has a unique angular design.
Glenrio, a ghost town at the New Mexico border was once used as a filming location for scenes of the 1939 "Grapes of Wrath". Site of the First/Last Motel of Texas, now in serious disrepair. Dilapidated gas stations, cafés, a water tower and a post office still stand along its Main Street.
Wildorado and Bushland, both east of Vega have a few picturesque run-down cafés and gas stations from the Route 66 era.
