This small picturesque town was founded in 1582 as a trading post. Despite loosing out on trade to other coastal towns, ten devastating fires and ransacking by Russian troops in 1721 Hudiksvall have managed to remain an important regional town. During the 18th century it was labeld Glada Hudik (English: Happy Hudik) due to it's friendliness and lively social life and the term has stuck since then.
