The guys at the dock and on the street who make a living off the tourists coming off the boats are quite aggressive. If you arrive without having booked a hotel in advance the touts will harass you on the main street until you agree to go with them, they will take you only to the places where they can collect a commission from the owners, no matter if it's a nice place "just the good commission". They will say, "I am rasta-man! Do you want a hotel? i know what is the best place!!" but this can refer to any of several hotels, a few of which are quite far from the center, not clean or even noisy!!. It's much better to walk into the hotels by yourself, because the proprietors will be much happier to see you without one of the street touts demanding a fee. Be polite but firm. If you successfully avoid them, they can become angry and swear at you- which happened in one recent case- but not violent. Keep going and you will find many nice places not far from the dock to choose from, with wifi and reasonably priced rooms.
Sometimes the sentence "Buy me an ice cream" can be heard from panhandlers but a polite "No, thanks" helps.
Also there are some vendors which are very friendly in the beginning but then they try you to give money to them, then recieve the product (for example music cds). If someone is very stubborn and won't like to show what he has to sell, don't give money to them. Also it is possible that people ask you if you would like to fish, for example. But then they will ask you for some money for the gas and the harbour. Be advised: Ask for an official shop or a receipt. Your money might be gone the next day.
