 WARNING: On 11th March 2011 the area was hit by an earthquake with a 9.0 magnitude followed by a tsunami and several aftershocks. The structure of the bay and islands blunted the impact of the tsunami on the main tourist area, but some notable structures suffered structural damage due to the earthquake. Similarly, many turist oreinted business are closed due to damage, but there are still sufficient services for any traveler. East Japan Railways' Senseki Line (which serves the coastal areas) has resumed service to Matsushima-Kaigen station, closest to the islands areas, but only from Sendai. The section of track between Takagimachi (the station after Matsushima-Kaigan) and Yamoto stations remains closed, so there is no access by train from Ishinomaki. |
