Founded in 1964, Reston was the first modern planned community in the United States. It was named after its founder, Robert E. Simon (RESton). The first community developed in Reston, Lake Anne Plaza , still retains the most "character" of the city. Today, the city is home to offices of many high tech companies, such as AOL, Microsoft, Accenture, and the US Geological Survey. A modern Reston Town Center attracts most of Reston's visitors and shoppers.
