Border Patrol in Buffalo

Border Patrol in Buffalo

As Buffalo is located directly on the United States-Canada border, the US Border Patrol frequently conducts random immigration checks around the city. These are common on buses, trains, and in the city's bus terminal, two train stations and airport (with the intent of catching illegal immigrants who have evaded the border and are attempting to travel inland) but they sometimes patrol Buffalo's streets, and occasionally set up vehicle check-points. If approached or stopped by Border Patrol you'll be asked to declare your nationality and possibly your place of birth. These checks are routine and unless you are here illegally they are nothing to be concerned about.
  • If you are a US Citizen simply affirm so and they'll usually move right along. You are not required to carry proof of citizenship when traveling domestically, and border patrol will never ask for it, but if they have a reason to doubt your claim (e.g. you were naturalized and have a heavy accent or don't look "western"), carrying proof of citizenship or at a minimum photo ID or other documents establishing that you are here legally will generally speed the process.
  • If you a permanent resident, you will need to show your green card.
  • If you are from abroad they will ask you a few questions about your trip and ask to see your passport, I-94 entry record and visa (if applicable).
